Anthropologie Extra 20% off Sale – My Picks

It’s Anthropologie Summer Sale Time! Today is the last day to use promo code “saleaway” for an added 20% off all markdowns. There is a dress that I have been stalking at Anthropologie for a few weeks now but the $169 price tag gave me pause. It was one of those times where I added it to ‘my cart’ several times, saw the total and still didn’t buy. Even when it went on sale once, I still didn’t pull the trigger. My waiting paid off! Anthropologie is having their big summer mark down prices. It brought my coveted dress down from $169 to $39!!! And they keep torturing me by adding more dresses. Every time I went back writing this blog to insert links and images, there would be more cute dresses. So now I have a few more bookmarked to replace the one I had been waiting….lol…so it goes.

So here is my coveted dress – The Inkdrop Midi – lots of sizes left and such a steal!

imageI grabbed this cute ombré top from $68 down to $14! I like it for fall to pair with a denim jacket or black cardi.

imageThis is the ultimate little party dress and for such a deal! Originally $648 – ouch!

imageQuintana Maxi Dress down from $179 to $80.

anthmaxiEmbroidered Canaria Maxi Dress down from $298 to $119. I love this one. It’s like such a perfect brunch dress.

My Adventures in Color Running

imageSAVE $5 OFF REGISTRATION BY USING CODE HOUSTON1— A few years ago a friend of mine told me about this 5k where you get color thrown at you. I was deeply into doing 5k’s at the time trying to improve my time (trust and believe, I’m no hardcore runner but I was trying). I was used to the traditional, pay your $25, here’s your t-shirt, here’s your number, there’s the start line, now GO! You try to run as fast as you can, or walk as fast as you can, they tap you in at the end, give you a time and hope it’s better than your last one. The most adventurous I had come to a 5K was a Halloween themed one so you wore a costume as you ran. The idea of being doused in a rainbow while running? YEEEESSSSS! Then a month later I found out that for the first time The Color Run was coming to Rochester, NY. I participated in it twice in New York and this year it’s coming to Houston in October.

So here are my adventures in Color Running!

imageKids are welcomed and encouraged on the race! Which I think is awesome. I’ve always done the race with my daughter. The first time she did it she was 9 years old. But I see much younger kids running it or sitting in strollers while their parents push them. This is not an ideal choice. If you’re covered in powder, so is that stroller. I wouldn’t even want to tackle cleaning a stroller after the race or putting that nasty thing in my car. Lol! One of my favorite pre-Color Run activities is doing a rainbow mani. So each nail has a different color.

imageThe day before the race you are allowed to come and pick up your packet with all your items in it. You can pick them up on the day of the race but it’s better to have everything done the day before. One of the items is tattoos, so it’s easier to put those on at home before you leave.

imageCostumes are also welcome for the race. I’ve seen people dressed as unicorns and Elvis. The most popular is the tutu. Color Run also sells tutus but I like making my own. The Color Run is the most expensive 5k I’ve ever done. It’s double the price of most 5ks. But it’s worth it. You get a large bag of swag for the race – you get a very cute, soft t-shirt and that’s what most people wear for the race. It is the cutest 5k shirt I’ve ever seen and its not the scratchy cotton shirt other races usually give out. You also get a cotton headband, a number, tattoos, a rubber wristband, and your color packet for the end of the race. I like wearing a long sleeve shirt because it’s less mess to scrub off my arms later on. I also buy the Color Run bandanas because they’re super cute. But also it’s nice to cover the hair line because powder at the scalp is not fun scrubbing out later.

imageAt my first Color Run race they gave you your powder packet when you picked up your shirt and number. The problem with that was you had to then carry it around and have it through the race.

imageIt also made people want to open it before the end. The concept was you have it, do the race, and then at the finish line throw it. The second year they just passed them out at the finish line…good idea. They’ve also added in medals to everyone that cross the finishing line. That’s cute, especially for all the kids. Unlike other 5k’s there is no timing, you don’t know your final time unless you’re using an app on your phone to track your distance and pace (which is what I do).

The race starts at 8am, people are lining up about 15 minutes before. If you don’t want to stand and wait then you want to be as close to the front as possible, because here’s how it’s different. On a normal 5K, the horn sounds and every goes. Not at the Color Run. They allow people to go in waves, like groups of 100 and then 3 minutes goes by and another wave is let go.

In Houston, they are now allowing a “runner wave” so if you’re into running the whole thing, you get to go first and then all the “walkers or run/walkers” go in at additional waves. The reason is so that not everyone is clustered together throughout the race and through the color stations. The first time I waited 45 minutes to finally “go” and I hated it. The next year I was in the second wave so didn’t have to wait at all. They have DJs gearing up the crowd waiting to start and they throw free Color Run swag into the crowd.

imageThe Color Run has “color stations” throughout the race – usually about 5 different color stations along the way.

imageYou enter that color zone to have about 5-10 people throwing color at you. You can opt to stay in the middle more and run through for less color, or basically, stop, spin around, stand there and welcome to be covered in it. I’ve seen some people walk along the outsides of the color station so they don’t get colored. I’m not sure why you would do that, but I’ve seen it be done. It seems a little like baby powder and it will make you cough a little. I used my bandana to cover my face sometimes. I’m told it’s organic plant powder so not dangerous to inhale.

imageimageI highly recommend doing the race with friends. If you have a team of 4 or more it also saves money off the registration price.

imageBe careful of your cell phone. Some people put it in a plastic bag to save it from the powder but then you can’t take pictures along the way. My phone has been covered in the powder each time and nothing bad happened to it.

The Color Run has some amazing photo stops. They have signs at the start of the race and along the race that you can’t help posing in front of. They do have professional photographers that take pictures before, after and during the race. You can search your race number (don’t lose your bib) afterwards and see if they caught you. They usually get everyone at least once. And then you can purchase those pictures.

imageimageThere’s almost a euphoric effect that comes with doing the Color Run. It’s just FUN. I’ve enjoyed it with my daughter every year, and I want to bring my younger daughter who’s 6 this year to do it. I highly suggest covering your car seats for the drive home. That powder goes everywhere! Also having baby wipes in the car is nice for hands and faces and they’re disposable.

Do you want someone who looks like this climbing in your car for a ride home?? I think not. Trash bags, towels are great seat coverings.

imageJust be prepared that when you come home, no one wants to let you in the house! Lol

imageIt is not the easiest to get off. There are definitely some scrubbing involved. I usually wash my hair a couple of times. And if it’s concentrated in the scalp, you might need another wash. And be prepared to sneeze a rainbow for about 12-18 hours later.

But is it worth it? Absolutely! The Color Run is the most expensive 5K I’ve ever done and worth every penny. Kids are welcome. Friend teams are fun. There’s no stress in running or being left behind because you’re a walker. Most people are walking. And if you’re like me, you run some and walk some. Have fun! Stop and take some funny pictures! And just laugh! It’s worth it just for the two hours of laughter.

Watermelon Margaritas – Happy National Tequila Day!

Happy National Tequila Day!

Here’s an amazing recipe for Watermelon Margaritas. This will make a small pitcher, about 4 drinks. It’s a great summer  time drink.

3/4 cup Tequila (I used Patron)

3 cups chopped watermelon

1/4 cup of lime juice

2 tablespoons agave nectar

Optional: I also added a splash of limecello to give a little extra hit of lime. (Recipe on blog)

Its easy if you toss all this in the blender and mix it. Because I like mine on the rocks and my husband likes his like an adult slushie, I mix his in my Margaritaville machine with ice. Enjoy!

White Wine Sangria Recipe

I just wipped up some yummy white wine sangria that I wanted to share with you. I love these 1 quart Ball Mason jars from Hobby Lobby. They cost about $4 and they’re great for this recipe.

Make sure to make this 24 hours in advance so the fruit has time to mix in the wine. You can change the fruit out  to suit your tastes. You can’t really mess this up.

2 bottles semi-sweet or dry white wine

5 cherries chopped in half

1 peach chopped

12 strawberries

1/2 cup orangecello (lemoncello recipe in separate post)

Refrigerate overnight. Add 1/4 cup sprite, ginger ale or club soda to each glass. It should be about 1 part sprite to 3 parts sangria. I wouldn’t suggest adding it to the full mixture since it will go flat. Enjoy!

Eddie Borgo for Target – Jewelry, Handbags and Art

Update: I have been in my Target since writing this to buy a couple of things I was interested in. I found it all quite disappointing even down to the tacky cardboard display it was on. The clutch that I thought was cute was very cheap looking and feeling. Honestly, I wouldn’t use that clutch as a makeup bag much less a handbag. It felt like plastic. And the jewelry looked like it came from one of those jewelry kits you buy for little girls who are aged 7 And up. So I pass on this collection.

Eddie Borgo is the latest luxury brand to collaborate with Target. The Eddie Borgo for Target collection features more than 100 items including jewelry, accessories and wall art. The line launched yesterday, July 12th.

The collection features necklaces, bracelets and bags that can be customized by adding studs, totems and charms. Influenced by the craft culture of the 60s and 70s, the line gives the customer the opportunity to get creative and make one-of-a-kind accessories.

Be edgy. Be bold. Be charming and sophisticated. All in your own unique way. The Eddie Borgo for Target collection mixes stones, metals, shapes and shine in jewels, charms, bags and belts that you customize, mix, and match for a design that makes a statement: yours.

“We created components that all come apart and go back together – everything’s convertible,” said designer Eddie Borgo. “I’ve never seen this type of collaboration in the marketplace. It’s the first of its kind.”

It’s a very cool concept to create something your own. If you’re like me, I hate having the same anything as everyone else. So this gives you a little creative freedom to create something that’s all your own. These clutches appeal to me the most. I love that it’s classic with some edge.

Unfortunately, it’s sold out online. This a cute little chain mail necklace that you can also add the studs or different charms to. It retails for $32.99.

17294616_Alt02The Eddie Borgo for Target Padlock Bracelet in gold. Includes 14 gold “padlock” loop beads that you can use for hanging any clip charms that fit with your style, mood or outfit of the day. Online only. $24.99 – as of right now it’s still available online.

17294604_Alt01Most items seem to still be available online with only a few pieces being sold out. And there is still availability at my local Targets, so I’m sure you won’t have any trouble finding it in yours. Happy Shopping!

Target Beauty Box is Back – Two Versions, each $5

The Target Beauty Box is back and it has a Back To College theme. Each are $5 and that includes shipping. The value is just over $20. These beauty boxes are different than what Target has released in the past, because they are geared to a younger girl. My 35 year old self is a little disappointed. I have ordered both, however, because I think that my soon-to-be 7th grader would enjoy a lot of the products. I’m only really interested in the John Frieda treatment and maybe the NYX lip gloss. The value is also less than usual. You normally get a near $40 value and this comes in at half that. I think it’s still worth the purchase, but hopefully we’ll get a higher end box next time.

Beauty Bag MUST HAVES!

Here are my current beauty bag MUST HAVES that will take you year round in the beauty and makeup department:

Pixi Unique Pink Tinted Brillance Lip Balm ($14.00)

tintedbrilliancebalm-closeup-uniquepink-24jul14-web_1This works with your pH level to create your own personal shade of pink. I have been using the Dior Lip Glow for a couple of years, which works just like this except the price is nearly double at $25. I bought this wanting to compare the two and Pixi blew away the Dior. I felt like the shade of pink was better, I liked that it was super hydrating and that the color is a slight stain so it lasts a long time! You can purchase online and earn 300 points for signing up and that will take off $3 making this $11 instead of $14!

Nuxe Shimmering Dry Oil (1.6 oz bottle $39)

I fell in love with Nuxe products on a trip to Paris in 2011. I had heard how fabulous the pharmacies were at having the most incredible beauty products and it didn’t disappoint. This oil by Nuxe is amazing. It is for face, body and hair. They do have a version without the shimmer but I find the shimmer very subtle and gives your hair and face a natural glow. It doesn’t look like you’re covered in glitter by no means. It just gives a subtle healthy looking glow. And the smell is amazing! I have a lot of allergies to perfumes, and this did not bother me at all.

fp-nuxe-huile-prodigieuse-or-50ml-face-2014-04Nuxe Reve de Miel Moisturizer (1.5oz $39)

This is hands down the BEST moisturizer I’ve ever used and I feel like I’ve tried them all. I stopped using this for about a year as I was trying a lot of different high end moisturizers that were coming in my monthly box subscriptions and nothing compares to this. I recently went back to it and never again will I stop using it. Great for super dry skin like me, but they have others for oily skin and anti-aging.

fp-nuxe-revedemiel-creme-visage-jour-fermee-face-2014-04Bodyography Brow Duo (Price $19)

The Essential Brow Trio. Featuring three matte brow powders in one handy compact flattering for all hair colors. This multifunctional product can act as a matte eyeshadow and liner as well! It lasts all day long and I’ve slept in it and woken up to still perfect brows. I used to use Anastasia’s brow pencil but this little duo is perfection. You can blend and make your own color.

3595-Brow-Trio-WebI would not get the duo without the brow brush. It really creates the perfect shape to your brows. Brow brush, $19.00

1010-brow-brush-720x720Loreal Infallible Makeup Pro-Setting Spray ($12-15)

This sets your makeup in a few sprays. It is gentle and non-irritating and can stand up against the hot days of summer. No one wants their makeup dripping down their face. I tested this out at the beach. I wanted to see if it could hold up through a day of sun and sand and it did! Normally I don’t wear makeup to the beach but I wanted to see how good this actually is and it passed the test.

Cos21q_1_pack-shot2Better Than Sex Mascara ($19)

The name is something else, huh? But this seriously is the holy grail of mascaras. It has fibers so it thickens and lengthens. And like some other fiber mascaras, it is not hard to remove. The brush is big and helps really separate and lengthen your lashes.

s1533439-main-hero-300Dr. Jart+ BB Cream SPF 45 ($39)

This BB Cream offers really good full coverage but without being heavy. Has an SPF 45 while also containing anti-aging properties. My face is dry and this is very hydrating. It’s a great multi-tasking beauty balm that I’ve been devoted to. Comes in two different shades. I use the light to medium.

A moisturizer, sunscreen, and treatment serum, this all-in-one product also includes advanced brightening properties. Ideal under makeup, its natural-looking coverage minimizes the appearance of imperfections and evens the skintone. Antioxidant bio-peptides and adenosine protect skin from harsh environmental factors while restoring firmness and elasticity. This lightweight formula features mineral sunscreens to provide broad spectrum sun protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Skin is left looking smooth, perfect, and natural.

MacKenzie Childs Barn Sale – July 16-19, 2015

The dates for the 2015 MacKenzie Childs Barn Sale have been announced! Thursday, July 16, 2015 through Sunday, July 19, 2015 from 8am till 6pm.

pic1Living in upstate NY it was hard not to fall in love with MacKenzie Childs, you either saw it in exclusive shops or you saw knockoffs of people trying to replicate it. Either way, I fell in love with the courtly check pattern. It reminded me of Alice in Wonderland with the black, white and red.

For years I had heard about the infamous Barn Sale held in Aurora every year, which was only an hour drive from where I lived. I missed several years of being able to attend because of the horror stories I heard of hours and hours of long lines just to get in. People come Wednesday and camp out overnight just to be the first to enter at 8am Thursday. And then you would be faced with hours and hours of lines to pay.

pic2Finally in 2013 I decided I was going to go and was ready for the long lines. I picked a Friday around noon to go and it also happened to be the hottest day of the year, which I guess worked in my favor because there was NO LINE. I walked right in. And was shocked to see how organized everything was. They have everything under tents organized by outdoors, enamelware, ceramics, holiday, glassware, furniture, etc. I was amazed how everything flowed so easily. I expected Black Friday “like” craziness and it was nothing like that. They have probably 25 registers and it works like a well oiled machine.

pic9pic8I went again in 2014, again on a Friday, but it was not the hottest day of the year and everyone was there. I waited in line to enter about 2 hours. But I understand the line. You can only have so many people shopping otherwise you can’t shop, you can’t move, you can’t see anything, and it’s a hazard. I brought water with me. But they also have someone going down the line with a cart to sell water and other drinks. They also brought out chairs for some of the older people that couldn’t stand for so long. There are port-a-potties set up outside in case you need them. It’s nice to go with friends but you’ll certainly meet people in line. People come from all over the country for this sale and it’s definitely worth it for the deep, deep discounts.

pix1Last year, I scored a lot of the same things as in 2013, half price courtly check bowls and plates. And more frames at 50-60% off. And….my most coveted item, the Piccadilly Beverage Hostess. It retails for $375 and the barn sale had it for $140!

picIn general you can expect to save 50% or more. Every day they also offer a particular category (ie outdoor, holiday) at an even deeper discount.

Please keep in mind that all Barn Sale purchases are final sale. I would also recommend a tour of the Farm House while you’re there, which stays open during the Barn Sale weekend. Formal tours are not given but you are welcome to walk around and tour the house on your own, which is done entirely in MacKenzie Childs. The master bedroom is truly incredible where several artists spent weeks painting the walls in courtly check.

pic7pic8The kitchen reminds me of something you would have in Barbie’s Dream House.

pic5pic6Is the MacKenzie Childs Barn Sale worth the hours of waiting in line? Yes! People come from all over the country to attend and save a lot of money. Now that I’ve moved to Texas in the last few months, I see myself as being one of those “out of staters” shopping the sale. So if you’re only a few hours drive from there and you haven’t gone because of the long lines don’t waste another year and go! I know a lot of people who lived in upstate NY all their life and LOVE Mackenzie Childs and haven’t gone because of horror stories they heard. It’s not that bad. You’ll survive and you’ll save a ton of money on your favorite pattern! So relax, slap on a pair of courtly check glasses and have fun!

Review – Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Disney World

disneyhalloweenHalloween is easily my favorite holiday! Last year we went to Disney World for Halloween and it was incredible. First off, the weather was perfect, not blazing hot and cool evenings. Here is my take on the Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party. We did this on actual Halloween, which is the most expensive day but it was well worth it.

DSC@If you’re interested in buying party tickets for Halloween then the sooner the better. Tickets go on sale in May and I would buy them immediately. Halloween ALWAYS sells out and every year it’s sold out sooner and sooner, generally in August the tickets are gone. 2015 tickets are on sale now and they start at $68 for adults and $63 for children. Halloween tickets are $87 for adults and $82 for kids. With our family of 6 it cost us just over $500. Was it worth that cost? YES! Would I do it again? YES! Did my kids love it? YES!

Now this is a special event ticket so you have to purchase this separately from your park tickets. We did no parks that day and opted to hang at the pool, relax and be rested for that evening. The party starts at 7pm but Disney allows you in as early as 4pm. Take advantage of that! That gives you three extra hours to eat, ride some rides so you can enjoy all the evening events.

DSC_3202 as Smart Object-1-MThe biggest advantage to the Mickey’s Halloween Party is everyone is allowed to dress up! This is the only time Disney allows adults to dress in costume, so as not to confuse the kids on who is actually a Disney character or some random person in a Cinderella dress. Since this is Disney I wanted to do a Disney couple for my husband and I so we went with Beauty and the Beast.

MK_MSGAZETT_7084020222Our little girls dressed as Anna and Elsa from Frozen – big shocker there! Lol 🙂

MK_MSGAZETT_7084022256My oldest daughter wanted to be Minnie Mouse, so I made her costume. And we recycled ears that we use every year to go with it.

MK_MSGAZETT_7084020981Now my son, who was 9 at the time did not want to dress in “Disney” characters and since it wasn’t a battle worth fighting, he picked Batman.

MK_MSGAZETT_7084016178We arrived right at 4pm so we could get all our photos taken and get that out of the way. At this time a lot of people were starting to leave the park since it closes to the general public at 7pm and we wowed a lot of people with our costumes. But our costumes were by no means crazy big or thrilling, not compared to some of the other costumes people wore. That’s one of the best things is watching all the people in their costumes from all different varieties. People are truly creative with their costumes and there are a lot of family costumes. It was truly incredible and fun to see. There was a lot of finger pointing and “look at that!!” I would say 90% of everyone is dressed up.

MK_MSGAZETT_7084020952Here is the 2014 brochure of events and how things are timed out:

DSC6My kids did almost everything and loved it all. The dance party was cute and they give the kids candy for participating. It’s basically a bunch of characters dancing in the street with the kids.

One attraction you can’t miss is going on the Haunted Mansion. How can you not do that on Halloween? The wait for that ride is 60-90 minutes which is a lot. You CAN get fastpasses but only from 4pm to 6:30pm so that’s why it’s good to get their soon. There are NO fastpasses after 7pm. I had fastpasses for 5:00pm, so we were able to take our pictures and get to the back of the park to use those passes in that first hour. We waited about 15 minutes with the fastpasses versus 90 minutes. I don’t think I would wait that long and waste so much time. Whether you ride it or not they do some fun pictures in front of it.

MK_HAUNTEDMANSIONEXIT_7084038584There is trick-or-treating set up throughout the park and is highlighted on your party brochure. So we get in this long line and we’re standing there about ten minutes and it’s a long long line but it’s moving fast and I’m wondering if it’s worth waiting 15 minutes to get a piece of candy but then you get to the candy and realize that there are SEVERAL Disney employees with barrels of different kinds of candy and they give you fist fulls. So one stop and half your bag is nearly full. My kids did about four candy stops and it took about 30 minutes – they had so much candy it would have taken several hours of trick or treating in the neighborhood. Some people don’t believe you should waste time getting candy at the party but when you have kids they still want to have that traditional Halloween trick or treating and it was worth it. And the candy is the best. Good, good candy. Not crap! Lol

There are a lot of characters stationed throughout the park. My kids were not into all the villain meet and greets that are offered but we did stand in line for Captain Jack Sparrow which is my husband’s favorite! It made his night!

MK_CARIBBEANPLAZACHAR_7084153980MK_CARIBBEANPLAZACHAR_7084153983We did take advantage of a shorter line to see Cinderella too.

MK_PFTHPURPLEB1CHAR_7084272883There are two times to see the parade and it’s worth seeing both times! One of the number one things people enjoy about this party is seeing the headless horseman start the parade but galloping through the streets. It is incredible!

DSC3The parade features some interesting villains, a Haunted Mansion float and performances. I loved the grave diggers dancing with shovels that sparked on the street as they danced.

DSC4Just like traditional evenings at Disney they have the traditional Celebrate the Magic at the castle and then fireworks. Fireworks are Halloween colors and a little different then the normal evenings.

DSC5I highly recommend this special event at Disney World. I think it completely justifies the price and it’s something our family hopes to do again in the future. We have the most amazing pictures. We did buy the Photo Pass for $149 which allows you to keep all your photos plus all ride photos, which is very worth the price. It took the stress out of always trying to get the perfect shot. When my kids were meeting characters I could enjoy the experience with them instead of spending all my time taking pictures.

Our family stayed till the very end of the party which is midnight. MK_ROSEGRDN_7084282891We made some incredible memories that night. I’m not sure Halloween will be the same this year. It’s a little hard to compete with Halloween at Disney!

funnySo true!
