Restoring an Old Steamer Trunk

In December I was doing a little antiquing with a friend when I stumbled on a really great find….an 1895 steamer trunk for $60. It was in really good condition. Most trunks you find have to have the canvas removed because it’s in such bad shape, which leads to many many hours of removal. This trunk’s canvas was in good condition and didn’t need to be removed. Now, I’m a huge fan of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and love doing something fun with antiques but I really wanted to stay true to this trunk. So if you’re looking for that look there are many other blogs about restoring with chalk paint. I just wanted to enhance its beauty to a more original state and not do anything that compromised its original look. It took me about 4 weeks to finish it. And here are some of my tips and tricks. Here is the BEFORE shot… imageThe first step was to remove all the old wallpaper that was on the inside. The old paper was making the inside smell terrible too. The wood underneath the paper was in beautiful condition. But this was the hardest part of the restoration. I don’t know how many hours I spent scrapping paper out of it. All you need is a water bottle and scraper. Spray the water, let it sit for about 30 seconds and then scrape. Sometimes you’re lucky and it’ll come off in big pieces but mainly its a lot of little pieces to remove. image image image imageI was lucky to not have to remove the canvas but there were some noticable rips on the inside lip. I used a razor and just trimmed it to give a more clean appearance. And then I was just going to stain that inside lip the same as the interior. imageimageimageNext I sanded all of the wood on the exterior of the trunk. It had some leftover varnish that I wanted to remove. I did not sand the interior since it was raw unstained wood and didn’t need it. Here are some pictures from that process. image imageI also spent some time gently sanding the lock on the trunk that had a pretty heavy coveringย  of rust. It’s an amazing old lock. One of the things I’d like to do later is get a key that fits it. There are several websites online that will sell you old keys. imageNext I used a black paint to paint the metal on the sides. It was pretty banged up and the new paint really helped. This top corner is with the paint versus the other portions you see. I tapped off so you didn’t get black on that beautiful wood. imageimageimageNext I took a black craft paint and a brush and basically “dry brushed” it onto the canvas. This trunk had white paints marks on it from someone storing it in a bad location. And the canvas was a little dull in color. I didn’t want to soak my brush in paint and apply, just a little bit on the brush and brushed, brushed and brushed. Just to give it an enhanced color. Here is a picture of one side dry brushed and the other not. You definitely see how it helps enhance the canvas without completely painting it. You can see from the tiny bottle of craft paint and how little I applied to my brush basically what I’m referring to by dry brushing. Make sure your exterior has been cleaned with hot soapy water before you do any painting to remove all dirt and debris. imageimageimageOne very common problem with trunk restoration is the leather handles are broken off. I mean it is 120 years old, those straps definitely had done all they could do! Lol! It’s very easy to order replacement handles online. I found mine for $15 for the pair and they’re real leather. You can research your trunk and find which handles are appropriate for yours since there are a lot of different style and color handles. imageimageNext thing was to stain the wood on the interior and exterior. I used a Minwax wood stain with varnish, all in one in a medium brown. I brushed and wiped. It took two coats. imageimageThis picture really shows the before and after on the exterior slates. The stain really made it beautiful. imageThe interior looks absolutely gorgeous! imageNow here’s a side-by-side of before and after. It makes me appreciate the hard work I did in scrapping off that old wallpaper.

One final touch I did was getting a stenciling kit and did the initials of me on one side and my husband on the other. I did not want it to appear perfect but like some old stamping. This piece was done to go in our bedroom to store extra blankets and bed linens. I’m really proud of how it came out. I definitely would like to do it again and maybe do something fun with chalk paint next time. trunk imageimage

Lilly Pulitzer for Target – 6 days and Counting!

Who else is getting super excited about the Lilly Pulitzer for Target launch on April 19th?! I plan on doing both online and in store shopping. Who else thinks this will “break the internet”? Lol! I’m excited for the cute little girls outfits that come in the same prints. Very southern to match with your daughters, especially in an LP print. The clutches, the straw bags for the beach, the sandals, the swimsuits, the dresses, the scarfs….it’s also going to break my bank account. I hope you all get the pieces you’re coveting. Here are some of my favorite LP for Target pieces. Good luck and happy shopping!

The Target Beauty Box is back and the price has come down from $7 to $5! It is listed as a $38 value and it does have some nice products. The lipstick is valued at $5-7 so that one product right there justifies the price. Hopefully I’ll receive a good color for my skintone. I’m really excited to try the setting spray, those are always so pricey at makeup stores.

BOGO 50% off Target Sandals! Here are my picks…

Last year this was “the” shoe on Instagram. It sells out fast and everyone is always desperate to get a pair. It is only available online too. I have to say it lives up to the hype. They’re cuter in person, very comfortable, and I don’t find that the glitter falls off. And they’re back this year! Grab a pair before they’re sold out again!

imageI love when Target has BOGO for sandals especially when I’m looking out my window and seeing mounds of snow! But it makes me hopeful that warmer weather is coming. And right now with the BOGO it is also free shipping on orders over $25. So two pairs shipped free for about $35. Can’t beat that!

Here are my picks for spring and summer sandals from Target. This first pair “the Belinda” is my favorite! It looks just like the JCrew sandal from last year that sold for about $250. I’m super excited about these!

FREE Jewlry from Rocksbox! Use Code: Cocoforbeautyxoxo

I’m excited to have partnered with Rocksbox to give my blog readers a FREE month of jewelry! Use code: cocoforbeautyxoxo at checkout. It’s a $19 monthly box service where they send you 3 pieces of jewelry based on a style quiz of your personal preferences. Like only statement jewelry? Only dainty pieces? Or maybe a mixture of both? Your profile curates all of that for you so you get pieces that are picked just for you by a stylist. They even have a wish list where you can add pieces that you would like to see in your box. My first box had two of my wish list items! They have Kendra Scott, Lauren Hope, House of Harlow, etc.

So you get three pieces and you can wear them as much or as little as you like and then return them when you’re done and they’ll send you another three pieces. Fall in love with one or all of them? Then you can keep them at a discounted rate and you even get a $10 a month credit towards any piece you may want.

I love this concept because I get excited about a new piece of jewelry, wear it for a few days, and then it’s put in a box somewhere until I fall in love with something else I see. This is an excellent way to get to wear a lot of new pieces on loan instead of committing to buying them.rocksbox1

Bobbi Brown HOT Collection for Spring 2015

bbThe new Bobbi Brown HOT Collection has just launched! It is currently available at Sephora. I “like” Bobbi Brown but I don’t tend to “love” Bobbi Brown. I’m more of a Nars girl. Bobbi Brown tends to be more neutral based so I think this new Hot Collection really steps up and offers some bright pops of color for lips and shimmery lids and cheeks for spring and summer. Until this collection, I haven’t seen any blushes that have come close to the cult classic Orgasm by Nars. The blush kits offered in this new collection give a similar pink shimmery flush.

I ordered the lip pencil in Hot Berry and was pleasantly surprised when it arrived yesterday. It is bright and fun for spring and summer. It reminds me of YU by Nars. It came with a nice big sharpener too. I’m going for the eye palette next!

Bobbi Brown teamed up with Kate Upton as the poster girl for this new line. Kate is from Florida and Bobbi wanted her to showcase that beachy look with a woman who exudes easy confidence.

DIY: Jeweled Heart on Canvas

My mother passed in July and I was left with more jewelry than I could ever possibly wear. There were a lot of costume brooches and several broken pieces of jewelry. So I decided to make a heart on canvas with them. It’s a special way to use some of the pieces of jewelry that I wouldn’t be able to wear and just stuck hidden in a drawer. It’s very simple.

You need the following:

8×10 canvas (or any size of your preference)

Lots of jewelry pieces.

needle nose pliers

Gorilla clear fast drying glue

imageNow you could use E6000 glue and I know that’s a preference for most crafters and I do like it a lot as well. But for this particular project, I like the clear Gorilla glue because it’s fast dryer and it really is able to handle holding up those heavy pieces of jewelry, and the last thing I want is pieces falling off over time.

I started by drawing a heart with a pencil. I used a necklace to create a clean line with the outer walls but you don’t have to do it like that. You can just use the jewelry to form the shape.

image

Now place your larger pieces down first so that you can build around them with the smaller ones. I wanted the cross in the center so I placed that one first.

image

It had a pin back AND a hook to wear it as a necklace, so I popped that off very easily with my pliers.

imageimage

Once I had my largest pieces arranged and used their natural curves to make the top of the heart then I placed smaller pieces. Some I broke down even more so I can use a single stone to fill in a void. I had a bracelet with my moms name, so I tore that up so I just had the name part and placed it within the heart. It really makes it super special having her name in it. I even tore up an old Brighton watch that she wore and just included the watch face.

image

The finished product! Took a total of 45 minutes. Now I’m off to Hobby Lobby to get a really cool frame for it. I absolutely love it! You can easily recreate this with broken jewelry, jewelry from thrift stores, antique stores. It’s a cool way to make art.

Plus Size Ladies Rejoice – Target Launching New Plus Size Line, Ava & Viv – Feb 22

The plus size debate has been going on for awhile it seems with Target. Last year all the plus size sections suddenly, and without explanation, disappeared for months. When pressed Target said they were revamping and bringing new things in. But when it came back it didn’t really deliver anything new, different or a variety of anything.

Target is known for amazing designer collaborations and Lilly Pulitzer is the first designer collab to offer a plus size range (only sold online).ย Target is finally listening to the plus size ladies of fashion and have collaborated with three bloggers to offer a new line at Target stores called Ava & Viv with sizes ranging from 14-26. One of the bloggers chosen to help with the collab was a blogger known for bashing Target and creating a boycott against them after they failed to deliver any sizes over 16 with the Altuzarra launch. It looks like their beef was squashed and they could come together to create something amazing for the curvy girl. I love the concept of a store collaborating with a blogger. The bloggers are US — all of us. They represent real women in real time. I hope to see more stores turn to bloggers for style inspiration. I think it will offer a fresh take on what women like and what we don’t like.

There looks to be about 100 pieces being offered in this new line. Here is a peek of what is being offered when they launch Feb 22nd.

Recipe: Italian Naan Bread Pizzas

imageI make homemade pizza once a week and everyone loves it. But it is exhausting making my own dough and standing in front of a 485 degree oven, so these pizzas are my easy fix at something my family will love and I can make in minutes.

You start with a package of Naan bread. I buy mine at Wegmans in the family pack. I lay out a piece of tin foil just to make cleanup easier. So here’s what you’ll need:

Naan Bread

Fresh Buffalo Mozzerella

Fresh Basil

Bruschetta (or you can make your own)

Artichokes

Fresh Garlic

Balsamic Vinegar Reduction

Simply spread your bruschetta topping over the Naan bread. I use a mix that is already made up on the olive bar at my grocery store but you could make your own. It’s just chopped tomatoes and olive oil. Then slice up your fresh buffalo mozzarella and lay it on. Top with fresh garlic and artichoke and scatter your fresh basil. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes. When it comes out do a swirl of balsamic vinegar reduction and serve. Enjoy!

Review of 310 Nutrition Shakes – Part 1

UPDATE: There is a Part 2 for 310!

This will be a multiple blog post of my journey of using 310 Nutrition Shakes in order to shed a little weight from the holidays. I’ve also included a discount code to try 310!

imageI love a good protein shake as a breakfast or lunch supplement. I have never really done two meal replacements using them. I usually buy EAS from Target in chocolate and I always thought it tasted pretty good. There’s been a lot of social media buzzing over 310 Shake recently – I’ve heard it was amazing at helping shed weight and an incredible nutritional makeup. So it’s good for you too!

So I compared the ingredients of 310 Shake against my old shake mix (EAS) and I was pretty surprised. 310 had half the carbs, no saturated fat, less than 1g of sugar, triple the amount of vitamins (sometimes five times the amount), even 30% of your daily biotin! Hello, beautiful hair! ๐Ÿ™‚ It also had a whole list of amino acids that mine didn’t have any of. All of these things I took into consideration since I was going to be paying triple what I normally pay. But I have to say that the makeup of 310 blows away my old shake mix that I “thought” was really good for me. And now it makes me kind of go, “What in the hell was I drinking?!” It kind of looks horrible when you put them side-by-side.

imageI started one week ago and I’m still unable to fully commit to two shakes a day, every day, because let’s be honest, I’m starving! When I’ve done two shakes a day, I get pretty hungry by 2pm. And dinner isn’t until 5:30 so then I want to start snacking. I expected to be fuller for longer because I usually am with my old one. And I’ve also added the 310 Thin which is an additional supplement. It’s supposed to act as an appetite suppressant, taking one capsule twice a day. Well, if it is working than I can’t imagine what my hunger would be like without it. But I will say that when my body is burning fat and calories, I usually am ready to eat house and home. On days where I’m dieting but not really hungry anyway, I know my body isn’t burning too much. So I’m gonna work through the hunger and eventually make it consistently to two shakes a day, every day and not just sometimes. I mean my poor body went from holiday cookies and carb overload to just shakes for most of the day, so it is a big shift. Lol

So my favorite recipe is this:

1 cup almond milk

1/2 cup water

1 tablet of 310 Thin opened and put in the shake

1 scoop chocolate powder

half a frozen banana

(You can also add a little cinnamon to this recipe too!)

imageimageimage

And blend away! The taste is really good. I don’t feel like I’m forcing myself to drink it in any way. In fact, it’s usually gone in the first 60 seconds. It only takes a couple minutes to make. I really like the frozen fruit in mine but if you don’t have any or don’t have time to use a blender you can use the 310 Shaker cup so you can run out the door. I personally need the ice component so if I don’t have fruit then I would just use a handful of ice. And I pour it into one of my Starbucks Venti cold cup tumblers which is the perfect size for it.

imageA second recipe that I have tried is:

1 cup almond milk

1/2 cup water

1 tablet of 310 Thin opened and put in the shake

1 scoop vanilla powder

1 cup frozen strawberries

There are a lot of more elaborate recipes on the 310 site but I don’t want to get into some of them because I don’t want to add added sugars like honey. But there’s one with frozen cherries that sounds good. So look for my next 310 entry for different recipes that I’ve tried. Now, here is a discount code for you to try 310 Nutrition. You save $10 off any product order for the month of January. Chocolate is my favorite powder ๐Ÿ™‚
